Location: Calgary with field travel as required



The Vice President, Engineering will be a critical member of Fractal Systems’ executive team, playing a key role in realizing the value of the company’s proprietary technologies and ensuring their commercial success.  The successful candidate will have overall accountability for the construction of future Fractal facilities, demonstrations and commercial scale operations using the company’s technologies, and be the lead technical representative when working with partners. The candidate will also play a key role in the continued development of the company’s technologies

Key Accountabilities:

The position will include the following responsibilities:

  • Drive the continued development of Fractal’s technologies by leveraging learnings from operations and collaborating with the company’s R&D group in Quebec;
  • Develop optimal design and operating strategies for future facilities;
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with clients and partners; support business development efforts by being Fractal’s key technical representative;
  • Oversee the conclusion of the Enhanced JetShear with ARP commercial demonstration project:
    • Monitor and evaluate facility operations to ensure high reliability and optimal performance;
    • Trouble-shoot technical issues as they arise;
    • Communicate results of project to client throughout demonstration;
    • Target goals of :
      • 1) meeting processing objectives with commercial size nozzles,
      • 2) achieving nozzle life performance,
      • 3) meeting facility operability and throughput expectations with no safety or environmental incidents, and
      • 4) achieving certain product quality targets (product stability, H2S content, acidity, and liquid yield);
  • Represent Fractal in the sanctioning, design, construction and operations of a full-scale commercial facility commencing in 2017 with major partner,
  • Lead the sanctioning, design and construction of future Fractal projects:
    • Utilize data from previous projects to optimize design and recommend best alternatives, considering costs, feasibility, schedule, safety, and environmental considerations;
    • Evaluate, select, and manage outside engineering and construction resources;
    • Create integrated estimates for project costs, tracking and reporting on deviations to these project costs and budgets, as well as delivery against these costs;
    • Track progress of project against milestones on an on-going basis, taking corrective action as required;
    • Communicate project status and information to the rest of the leadership team;
    • Contribute to the improvement of project management processes and standards;
    • Instill a project safety culture and ensuring safe delivery of the project, ensuring that projects is delivered to meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee future Fractal facility operations;
  • Contribute to overall strategy of the organization by collaborating with the leadership team.

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering
  • P.Eng. status with APEGA

Experience, Competencies & Attributes:

  • 10+ years’ experience in the design, construction and operations of facilities within the oil and gas, refining or petrochemical sectors;
  • Exposure to oil sands projects strongly preferred;
  • Superior project management skills, with a track record of effectively managing suppliers, engineering and construction companies and executing projects on time and on budget;
  • Ability to collaboratively troubleshoot and problem solve with the organization to address complex and unique operating challenges; experience working with early stage technologies would be highly valued;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build strong external and internal relationships;
  • Ambition and desire to work hard and create success within an entrepreneurial environment; experience working in a small organization would be an asset;
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor technical operations staff;
  • Positive industry reputation for safe, ethical and environmentally responsible oil and gas operations; and
  • Experience in developing or managing an IP portfolio would be an asset.
